IFD—International Folk Dance
in Veszprém (Hungary)

We keep an open dance house

Inita General features Since 1997 we (40–70 dancers) have been meeting every Thursday in order to learn and enjoy folk dances of different nations. Our friendly and merry activity is characterized by much  fun. You can join and leave us anytime. The club has no ensemble for presentation of dances. We keep an open dance hall.

Purpose Our purpose is to enhance community by means of folk dancing, to leave people with a good impression of each evening. We are sure that the community-oriented dancing is very popular  in our club.

Etiquette Our etiquette is quite similar to that of other recreational clubs of the world. Thus, we put emphasis on the following rule. "Never forget that you were once beginner, and that others helped you become a good dancer by tolerating your mistakes. Always help new dancers!"

Name In accordance with the rules of IFD clubs, we are always in high spirit when dancing. That's why our recreational club has been called "High Spirit Club (Jó Hangulat Klub)" since 1998. Once an outsider—working next door during the IFD evenings—remarked: „It is surprising for me that you are always in high spirit!”

Guest from Turkey Dances At the time being we have ca. 60 circle (e. g. Zorba, Hava Nagila, Georgevka), 60 multi-couple (e. g. Sternpolka, Virginia Reel, Just because, Tarantella, Flowers of Edinburgh) and 20 single-couple (e. g. Mexican Waltz, The Lord of the Dance) dances. On the first picture Inita from Latvian teaches a latvian dance. The second picture shows Ahmet from Turkey. He visited our club on 12. 02. 2009.

Leadership Our group is subordinated to the Public Education Department of University of Veszprém. The "leader and caller" (Timár L., teacher of computer science) is a self-educated hobby-dancer. Nevertheless in 1970 he was a passive member of a folk dance club in Munich. His enthusiastic daughter (Veronika) and other fanatic members assist him when teaching, instructing and demonstrating the dances.

About our IFD Balls

polonaise General features Three times a year we organize an IFD ball involving circle, multi-couple dances and many waltzes and polkas for the members and their guests. We think, it is a proper program for any international folk dance club.

Special events The ball involves lots of ceremonies. "Knighting"of some gallant "gentlemen" is always an attractive event.

Waltzing in the dance programme Another attractive event is the couple dance program with dance-cards (prescribed order of waltzes, polkas, tangos and czardash) in accordance with the old-fashioned balls in the time of Strauss—Dynastie. The young dancers are not averse to waltzes and polkas. On the contrary, they enjoy them very much.

65 succesful balls may confirm that we could restore to life some characteristics of the old balls within our community. Beside the couple dance program we have lots of circle and multi-couple coreographies.

Welcome to our club

Circle dancing The set of pictures is ended by an IFD evening photo taken in 2012. You see a circle dance. Every dancer seems to be having so much fun. IFD is community-dancing, where all are made to feel welcome—young, old, single, married.

We hope our pictures captured the in-the-mood-feeling very well.

If you get to Hungary be sure to look us up (like Achmed and his fellows from Turkey)!
